WHO WE ARE

Lady+ Geeks of Austin is a haven for the women-identifying and non-binary geeks of Austin and surrounding areas.

Founded in 2016, we were originally 'Lady Trainers of Austin', a space for people to come together and play the newly released Pokémon Go mobile game.In a span of just a couple months, we realized that the community should grow to open its arms to all forms of geekery, from board and video games to arts and crafts and more. That's when we transitioned to Lady+ Geeks of Austin.LGA focuses in on the topics that most interest our members. We start off with interests we all know and love, and then we evolve to include more as we expand our understanding of what 'geeky' is.We stand proudly with the LGBQTIA+ community, and we welcome all who identify as women and whose identify falls under the non-binary umbrella.We maintain a zero-tolerance policy toward any kind of discrimination, hate, bullying, gate-keeping, harassment, and fan-shaming, and have become a safe space for our members to connect.

WHAT WE DO

We help our members meet, make connections, and forge friendships through our online platform and in-person social events.While LGA organizers happily host for our members, we also encourage and support members who want to host their own events and organize get togethers.

WHAT IS DISCORD?
Imagine a private virtual hangout spot where all the members of LGA can chat, share, and have fun together. That's Discord! It’s like the ultimate digital clubhouse where you can jump into any conversation, whether it’s voice chats, text chats, or even video calls.We can create our own rooms—called "channels"—for just about anything geeky and more, from video games to cooking, movies, or even just sharing what you’re up to with everyone.It’s super customizable, so you can make it as wild or chill as you want. If you’re worried about having yet another app that vies for your attention, don’t! You won't automatically receive notifications for all messages as our server is set up to only notify you if you're specifically mentioned.When you entered our server, you’ll selected what “categories” or geeky topics you’d like to be involved with. From there, you can mute any channels you don’t want to engage with and turn on notifications for any that you do!

TECHNICALLY..
Discord is an instant messaging and VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) social platform which allows communication through voice calls, video calls, text messaging, and media. Communication can be private or take place in virtual communities called "servers". A server is a collection of persistent chat rooms and voice channels.Discord can be accessed via browser, mobile app, or desktop app.

Are there any fees associated with being a member?
No, we don't have membership fees.

What 'surrounding areas' are permitted to join LGA?
We accept everyone within an approximately 1-hour or less drive to central Austin.

Where do events get hosted?
Events are usually hosted in North/Central Austin as that is the most centralized location for all our members, but we do have events that get hosted farther north and south. The locations are at the discretion of the hosts.

Is LGA on any other platform?
We are exclusively on Discord.

Did LGA used to be on Facebook?
Yes, but we felt that..
1.) Facebook Groups no longer served us as a platform for community.
2.) It no longer aligned with our ethics, values, and culture.

What does the + in Lady+ Geeks of Austin stand for?
The + was added to our name to visibly signify that we accept those whose identity fell under the non-binary umbrella.

Why do you only accept those who identify as women and whose identity falls under the non-binary umbrella?
We strongly believe that it's important to maintain safe spaces for ladies/they's to meet and geek together without the toxicity that can be found in existing geek spaces.
